With the motto “Beatus homo qui invenit sapientaim” which means “Blessed is the one who finds wisdom”, Abertay University is the first university in the world to offer a degree in Ethical Hacking from the year 2006 and the first in the country to be the Center for Excellence in Computer Games Education which is recognized by Skillset and share partnerships with broadcast and interactive firms like BBC Vision, BBC Scotland, BSkyB, Codemasters, Channel 4, Electronics Arts, Rare, Blitz Games Studios, Microsoft, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and Disney Interactive. The university conducts researches mainly on four themes which are Creative Industries that focuses on digital cultures, digital living and games research, Security which include cybersecurity, forensic sciences, law and forensic psychobiology, Environment which comprises food science and innovation, environmental science and engineering and Society which has set its focus on business, media and culture, psychology, sports performance and exercise and economics and management.

Campus Life

Located in Dundee, Abertay University’s campus buildings include Old College buildings of Dundee Business School, Ethical Hacking labs, the Bernard King Library and modern games labs in the UK Center for Excellence. The Bernard King Library which was inaugurated in 1998 and situated in Bell Street was selected as the best new building by the Scottish Design Awards competition 1998 for its “open book” style front and stone rectangular spine. The library provides online subscriptions along with an IT suite, a specialist Law Library and English Language learning center. The Students’ Association of the university is situated in the Student Center building which also has an art gallery named Hannah Maclure Center, student bars, food and trading shops and a cinema in it. The accommodation sites of the university allocated for its students are spread among Lyon Street, Meadowside Hall, Keiller Court and Parker House. The sports teams of the university compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport leagues and several of the alumni have represented their country in international events.

Shehzad Afzal, an excellent game designer, Vikki Bunce, a hockey player, Stewart Hosie, a Scottish National Party MP and musician Malcolm Duncan are few among the most notable alumni of Abertay University.
